Understanding the Roots of Anxiety: Overcoming the Fear of Anxiety Itself
Every feeling of anxiety stems from a specific cause. If it weren’t for these causes, you might never experience anything beyond normal, everyday worries. It’s crucial to understand that the root of your initial anxiety and the reasons for any subsequent anxiety are fundamentally different.
The origin of your first anxious episode can usually be traced back to certain life situations or events that triggered it. While we can’t change the past, there’s good news: we can address the causes of the subsequent anxiety.
The reason we experience further anxiety is simple. The initial episode of anxiety is an extremely unpleasant experience, naturally leading to fear of feeling that way again. This fear, rather than an indication of illness, is a normal reaction to wanting to avoid the discomfort of anxiety. The fear and dread of experiencing anxiety again activate our brain to produce all the negative thoughts associated with anxiety, which in turn create the symptoms that lead to more anxiety.
After one or a few initial episodes of anxiety, we develop a continuous fear of experiencing it again. Our series of articles dives deeper into this phenomenon and provides more insights.
